OCR: Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception List of Work to Be Done on the Virgin of the Rocks Altarpiece April 25, 1483 Milan, Archivio di Stato di Milano, Cimeli, c. 1 (A), fasc. 42 Leonardo and the brothers Ambrogio and Evangelista de Predis receive the commission to paint elements of an ancona, or altarpiece, by the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in Milan. Of three painted panels they are to complete, the centerpiece, which became known as the Virgin of the Rocks, exists in two versions; one is preserved in the Louvre in Paris, the other at the National Gallery in London. None of the surviving documents explains why the second version of the painting was made. The final version of the contract was lost sometime within the past 75 years; the two remaining drafts of the first version and a list setting forth what was required of the painters have all been badly damaged by water. The list is shown here in translation.
